Story behind the picture: | I stumbled upon this juvenile Green Heron at Oakes Quarry Park, in Fairborn, Ohio. It’s not the biggest heron, especially when compared to the more common Great Blue Herons and Great Egrets that we get all over North America, so finding this little wader isn’t always the easiest task. On this day in the late afternoon, I was photographing a flock of Canada Geese when I noticed this little fisherman hunting along the pond’s edge. The heron was completely oblivious of me while hunting which allowed me to get very close although trekking across the jagged rocks of Oakes Quarry Park is definitely not simple nor safe. I was watching and waiting for the perfect moment and the fishing contest winner turned right towards me and showed off the trophy in the warm, late-afternoon light. Easily one of my favorite photos that I’ve taken. |
