Bird Study Merit Badge

The Audubon Society of Greater Cleveland offers a Bird Study Merit Badge program in Aurora, OH. The program is led by a registered counselor for the Scouts BSA Bird Study Merit Badge.  It is offered as a 3-part program, with one meeting each during December, January, and March.  The program is part of the Troop 269 Merit Badge Challenge.

Scouts can complete 5 to 7 of the 8 requirements during this 3-hour program, which includes:

  • Presentations and discussions using approximately 100 photographs of local birds
  • Learning the songs of 20 common local birds
  • Care and use of binoculars
  • Instruction on the use of Bird Field Guides
  • During the last session, a 1-hour field trip on a nearby property with varied habitats led by experienced birders (adults welcomed)

Scouts will be expected to have reviewed the Merit Badge Book before the program.

Scouts who complete a bird feeder, birdbath, or create a backyard sanctuary outside of the program can complete the merit badge during the program.

If you are interested in participating, please send a request for information to info@clevelandadubon.org and the counselor will get back to you with specifics about the next available program.
