Bird Study Merit Badge

The Audubon Society of Greater Cleveland is now offering Bird Study Merit Badge at its Novak Education Center in Aurora, OH. It will be led by Matt Valencic, a registered Counselor for Greater Cleveland and Great Trails Councils and a former Scoutmaster.
Scouts can complete 5 – 7 of the 8 requirements during this 3-hour program which includes:
- Presentations and discussions using approximately 100 photographs of local birds
- Learning the songs of 15 – 20 common, local birds
- Care and use of binoculars
- Examination of feathers and wings using binocular microscopes
- Instruction on the use of Bird Field Guides
- 1-hour field trip in the Novak Wildlife Sanctuary led by experienced birders (adults welcomed)
The first scheduled program is October 22 from 9am – noon. Two other sessions will be held in the winter and spring, dates TBD. If this date does not work, special arrangements can be made for groups of 6 – 12 Scouts by contacting the Audubon Society at info@clevelandaudubon.org.

Scouts will be expected to have reviewed the Merit Badge Book before the program, be in uniform, dress for the weather (hike on grass trails), bring binoculars and a Field Guide (any author will be fine). A light snack will be served during breaks.
