SUMMARY:There's a Fungus Among Us! via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:It’s been a wet summer and fall\, and mushrooms seem to be popping up everywhere! But what are all these strange and colorful fungi doing in our yards and gardens? Let’s take a closer look at the mushrooms we’re seeing\, discover why they appear when the weather gets wet\, and uncover the surprising ways fungi help keep soil healthy. From breaking down leaves and other organic matter to recycling nutrients and teaming up with plant roots\, fungi play important roles in our ecosystems\, helping decompose organic matter\, support plant growth\, and keep nutrients moving through the soil. \nJim Chatfield is an Associate Professor and Extension Specialist with Ohio State University Extension\, where he has spent decades sharing his passion for plants\, plant health\, and horticulture. Known for his extraordinary teaching ability\, Jim makes even the most complicated horticultural topics fun\, engaging\, and memorable. When he’s not talking plants\, you may find him enjoying one of his other great passions: rock ’n’ roll! \nTo join the Zoom presentation please register\nwww.natureinmybackyard.ohionativeplants.org/programs\nNature in My Backyard is administered by Ohio Native Plants with support from\nAudubon Society of Greater Cleveland\, Shaker Lakes Garden Club\nand the Master Gardener Volunteers of Cuyahoga County. \n

SUMMARY:Autumn Leaf Crunch Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a saunter through the less traveled section of the Novak Sanctuary on the east side of Townline Road. We will pass through fields in transition returning to native species then into the forest which has been undisturbed since the mid-1900s. We will end at the site of our newly constructed Chimney Swift tower which is awaiting the spring migration. Meet at the Novak Sanctuary parking lot on the east side of Townline Road about a mile north of State Route 82 on the Aurora/Mantua border.

SUMMARY:Meadows of NE Ohio via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:When European settlers first arrived in Ohio\, they found a land that was 98% forested and rich in wetlands. Gardeners of today know\, however\, that a number of our native flowers and grasses prefer sunny\, drier conditions. These include meadow species like little bluestem and nodding wild onion. What were the natural factors that allowed these plants to colonize our area and persist to the present day? This presentation examines meadow communities of northeast Ohio\, with an emphasis on their origin\, characteristic plant species\, and ecological significance. \nDave Tomashefski co-owns Meadow City Native Plant Nursery in Cleveland\, where he is head of educational programming. Prior to Meadow City\, Dave worked at the Soil\, Water and Environmental Lab at Ohio State\, where he also earned his M.S. in Environment and Natural Resources. He is a lifelong nature lover\, having grown up birdwatching in Lakewood. His gift is finding the perfect plant for everyone! \n\nTo join the Zoom presentation please register\nwww.natureinmybackyard.ohionativeplants.org/programs
