SUMMARY:Frog Slog Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:The concert will be in full swing as the early season singers will be trying to outdo their neighbor’s voice. Bullfrogs\, Green Frogs and Gray Tree Frogs will be mostly silent waiting for warmer waters and the Wood Frogs are likely done but Spring Peepers\, Western Chorus Frogs\, Leopard Frogs\, Pickerel Frogs\, and American Toads will be in their element with furious competition to attract a mate. Join us for a night walk on a possibly muddy trail where you will be glad you wore rubber boots and brought along a flashlight. Meet at the Bretschnieder/Audubon Sanctuary parking lot on the north side of Pioneer Trail just a few hundred yards east of Page Rd. in Aurora. (Photo of bullfrog by Matt Valencic.)

SUMMARY:Woodcock Watch Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:This time of year an earnest display is occurring at twilight that has gone on for centuries. The male woodcock is desperately trying to woo the hen to join him on his “peenting pad” where he takes off in a fantastic flight display showing his fitness to be a father. This begins as early as late March and continues sometimes through May. The courtship display is amazing to watch and the birds often will allow fairly close approach if there are quiet and motionless observers. Join us for an evening performance at the Novak Sanctuary parking lot located on the east side of Townline Rd. less than a mile north of St. Rt. 82 on the Aurora/Mantua border. SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Help us contribute data to the Great Backyard Bird Count by participating in our annual winter bird survey. We will be recording every bird we see or hear along the trail in the beautiful Aurora Sanctuary. This is a great time for beginning birders as it is easy locate our quarry with no leaves to obscure and frustrate observation. Most winter birds in our area are easy to identify and there is a lower number of species so as not to overwhelm the new birder. Often an unusual species makes and appearance to add to the excitement. Meet at the Bretschneider parking lot on the north side of Pioneer Trail a few hundred yards east of Page Road in Aurora.

SUMMARY:Winter Track Walk Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:An inch of fresh snow will hold the impressions of footprints giving us the clues as to whom or what has walked the trail before us. There are numerous possibilities from coyotes to Wild Turkeys. Many resident wildlife are so shy and retiring that we don’t even know what species share the woods with us. Dramatic predator/prey-life and death stories can be read by looking at the signs in the snow along the trail. Please join us at the Novak Sanctuary parking lot on the east side of Townline Road a little more than a half mile north of State Route 82 on the Aurora/Mantua border.

SUMMARY:Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:The Christmas Bird Count began in 1900 when ornithologist Frank Chapman suggested counting birds instead of shooting them. Ten or more people divide up a fifteen-mile-diameter circle where they count all the birds they see or hear in their section of the circle within a 24-hour period. Some people just watch feeders and some go out after dark to listen for owls. This will be the second year for The Portage County Circle. People will be assigned an area of the circle as close to their home as possible\, and may bird alone or in a group as they prefer. A detailed map and tally sheets will be provided. Afterwards\, gather at the Novak Education Center\, 382 Townline Road in Aurora\, at 5:00 pm to get warm\, report findings\, tell stories\, and have something to eat and drink. Contact info@clevelandaudubon.org if you’re interested in participating.

SUMMARY:(Close to) Winter Solstice Hike Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Keep us company on this winter’s night hike to experience the forest after dark during some of the longest nights of the year. If we are lucky enough to have a light coating of snow and a clear sky the waxing first quarter moon should provide all the light we need. The muffled quiet of the winter woods is soothing while excitement is felt as an owl begins its performance or a coyote howls. SUMMARY:The Leaves Are Down (but our spirits are up!) (Field Trip)
DESCRIPTION:Without the leaf foliage our views will not be impaired and we will easily see the terrain and other topographical features of the landscape. Join us for a walk to see the changes that have occurred 1 year after clearing the southern fields at the Molnar Sanctuary. Last autumn Kenny Kresina spent many hours turning European Buckthorn that was too robust for our brush-hog into mulch. He used a specialized machine to cut and grind it. He has done some plantings since then and of course the Buckthorn is trying to rally a comeback but the battle has just begun. Meet at the Molnar Sanctuary parking lot on the west side of Page Road a few hundred yards north of Mennonite Road in Aurora.

SUMMARY:The Great Texas Birding Trail (Backyard Naturalist)
DESCRIPTION:Not many places in the United States can match the Texas Coast for outstanding birding opportunities. The Lone Star State initiated the development of birding routes\, with maps and signs\, to renowned spots as well as lesser-known locations\, and many other states have now followed suit. This presentation visits famous hotspots like Santa Ana\, Aransas\, Laguna Atascosa\, and Rockport/Fulton along with many of the hidden gems of the Gulf Coast. \nJeffrey Hall’s articles and photographs have appeared in Living Bird\, NJ Audubon\, Underwater Naturalist\, and numerous other publications\, as well as the Pennsylvania Society for Ornithology’s website. Over the last two decades\, he has given over a hundred presentations to birding groups\, nature and wildlife organizations\, and photography clubs. He served four terms as president of Washington Crossing Audubon Society in New Jersey. Jeffrey retired in 2011 after 25 years of teaching biology at the Pennington School in New Jersey. He lives in Franklin\, Pa. and is president of Bartramian Audubon Society and also active in Seneca Rocks Audubon Society.

SUMMARY:A Journeyman Birder's Retrospective (Backyard Naturalist)
DESCRIPTION:Mike Sustin\, National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellow \nIn 2012 Mike was chosen by the National Geographic Society to be one of 14 Grosvenor Teacher Fellows. He was given the responsibility of acting as an ambassador for geography and environmental education while aboard the ship\, National Geographic Discovery. They cruised the waters of the Barents Sea and hiked the shores of the Svalbard Archipelago roughly 600 miles away from the North Pole. \nSince then\, he has had some amazing travel experiences in which birding has played a significant role. He has introduced teens from northeast Ohio to the birds of Wyoming\, Costa Rica and Maine. This summer he was a student in a marine science class in Australia. Even though the focus of the course was coral reef health\, he always had one eye on the sky.

SUMMARY:Finding Fledglings
DESCRIPTION:Saturday June 20th 9:00 Finding Fledglings Former Aurora Country Club \n  \nJoin us to explore this former golf course that has been let go fallow for 2 seasons in search of fledglings. \nWork is being done to restore this to a natural area with removal of toxic soils and allowing the river to \nfind its natural corridor. Mowing is minimal with most of it restricted to the old cart paths. Since the \nAurora Sanctuary’s western border is shared with the Aurora Country Club’s eastern border it will be \ninteresting to see the changes in the wildlife and how they adapt.
