SUMMARY:Prairie Hike Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Laura Gooch. \nJoin us to see how prescribed burns can help to maintain a prairie. Frohring Meadow has a 100 acre tall grass prairie and wet sedge meadow habitat where grassland birds and migrating shorebirds can be found. Grassland habitat is unusual in our region\, therefore\, it attracts species not normally encountered. In early spring part of this prairie was burned to naturally maintain this herbaceous acreage. Over 40 species of prairie plants are encouraged and there is a demonstration garden plot showing examples of each one. SUMMARY:Twilight Hike Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Twilight is a special time for wildlife when roosting activity is occurring for the diurnal (day-time) creatures and wakening activity is occurring for the nocturnal creatures. Of course the crepuscular (twilight) creatures are at their ideal time of day. It is a cooler time of day and the fading light and lengthening shadows allow more concealment so that animals move about more freely. Often we hear owls\, coyote\, fox\, raccoon\, and deer. Many birds will be singing their call to roost song. Let’s see what we can turn up! Meet at the Novak Sanctuary parking lot located on the east side of Townline Rd. less than a mile north of St. Rt. 82 on the Aurora/Mantua border.

SUMMARY:Breeding Bird Survey Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Help us count every bird we see and hear on this early morning survey. This event has been organized and compiled by trustee Mary Salomon for over 10 years. She has shown us trends in the number and kinds of species using our sanctuaries. The data has been added and will continue to advance our study of the Chagrin River Corridor Important Bird Area (I.B.A.). We are trying to show how important our I.B.A. is and why it needs to be preserved.

SUMMARY:Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the lovely Nature Center at Shaker Lakes for our Annual Meeting on June 4th. We will start with a short nature walk on the boardwalk around Shaker Lakes\, followed by our Meet & Greet Wine reception at four o’clock. \nThe chapter meeting follows and we have a special treat this year. We will be announcing the winners of our first ever photo contest! The winning photos will be on display throughout the evening. \nFollowing a buffet-style\, catered dinner\, welcome our special guest Jeffrey Hall\, a writer and photographer from Franklin\, Pa. Jeffrey’s articles and photographs have appeared in Living Bird\, NJ Audubon\, Underwater Naturalist\, and numerous other publications\, as well as the Pennsylvania Society for Ornithology’s website. His most recent presentation for ASGC was at last November’s Backyard Naturalist program. Jeffrey retired in 2011 after 25 years of teaching biology. He is president of Bartramian Audubon Society and also active in Seneca Rocks Audubon Society. \nThe Nature Center at Shaker Lakes was founded in 1966 as the result of a grassroots community effort to preserve the Shaker Parklands from becoming the route for a new freeway connecting Cleveland’s East Side to downtown. The Parklands had been designated in the late 19th century as a natural green space\, set aside by the city of Cleveland for the benefit of its fast growing population. City and suburban residents found that they could enjoy the area along the Doan Brook\, from Warrensville Center Road through Rockefeller Park to Lake Erie\, and stay in touch with the natural world. \nThe Nature Center is located at 2600 South Park Boulevard in Cleveland\, OH. For directions\, contact the Nature Center at 216-321-5935 or email naturecenter@shakerlakes.org.\nSchedule of events: \n3:00 Bird walk along the boardwalk \n4:00 Meet & Greet Reception \n5:00 Chapter meeting and awards. SUMMARY:Frog Slog Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:The concert will be in full swing as the early season singers will be trying to outdo their neighbor’s voice. Bullfrogs\, Green Frogs and Gray Tree Frogs will be mostly silent waiting for warmer waters and the Wood Frogs are likely done but Spring Peepers\, Western Chorus Frogs\, Leopard Frogs\, Pickerel Frogs\, and American Toads will be in their element with furious competition to attract a mate. Join us for a night walk on a possibly muddy trail where you will be glad you wore rubber boots and brought along a flashlight. Meet at the Bretschnieder/Audubon Sanctuary parking lot on the north side of Pioneer Trail just a few hundred yards east of Page Rd. in Aurora. (Photo of bullfrog by Matt Valencic.)

SUMMARY:Woodcock Watch Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:This time of year an earnest display is occurring at twilight that has gone on for centuries. The male woodcock is desperately trying to woo the hen to join him on his “peenting pad” where he takes off in a fantastic flight display showing his fitness to be a father. This begins as early as late March and continues sometimes through May. The courtship display is amazing to watch and the birds often will allow fairly close approach if there are quiet and motionless observers. Join us for an evening performance at the Novak Sanctuary parking lot located on the east side of Townline Rd. less than a mile north of St. Rt. 82 on the Aurora/Mantua border. SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Help us contribute data to the Great Backyard Bird Count by participating in our annual winter bird survey. We will be recording every bird we see or hear along the trail in the beautiful Aurora Sanctuary. This is a great time for beginning birders as it is easy locate our quarry with no leaves to obscure and frustrate observation. Most winter birds in our area are easy to identify and there is a lower number of species so as not to overwhelm the new birder. Often an unusual species makes and appearance to add to the excitement. Meet at the Bretschneider parking lot on the north side of Pioneer Trail a few hundred yards east of Page Road in Aurora.

SUMMARY:Winter Track Walk Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:An inch of fresh snow will hold the impressions of footprints giving us the clues as to whom or what has walked the trail before us. There are numerous possibilities from coyotes to Wild Turkeys. Many resident wildlife are so shy and retiring that we don’t even know what species share the woods with us. Dramatic predator/prey-life and death stories can be read by looking at the signs in the snow along the trail. Please join us at the Novak Sanctuary parking lot on the east side of Townline Road a little more than a half mile north of State Route 82 on the Aurora/Mantua border.
