SUMMARY:Going for the Gold! Third Thursday Series (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Going for the gold! 30 years of Prothonotary Warbler Husbandry \nFor 30 years\, Dan Best has been providing artificial nest cavities to increase nesting success of Prothonotary Warblers (aka\, Golden Swamp Warbler) on the Upper Cuyahoga River in Geauga County.  Join us as Dan reports on nesting success and the many lessons learned about competition from other species\, predation and flood loss avoidance.  For the last 11 years Rachel McKinney\, a Science\, Math and Environmental Education teacher\, has assisted him with the many facets of the project\, including installing the cavities in spring\, banding adult and hatchling birds in summer\, data collection and removing cavities in fall. \nRegister in advance for this meeting: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYvdO-opzkvGteDT4YG4dGdq4mN2oPysIq-   \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

SUMMARY:Woodland Symphony Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Let us hear how many “instruments” are in our “natural orchestra” and who is accompanying! Often it is a 6- or 7-piece ensemble with many many chairs. First chair is the winner of the contest as they croon for the gals’ attention! Learn the calls of spring peepers\, wood frogs\, western chorus frogs\, leopard frogs\, green frogs and American toads. Frequently the local barred owls are critiquing the performance while the coyotes may be heckling from the shadows. Meet at the Novak Sanctuary parking lot on the east side of Townline Rd. about a mile north of St. Rt. 82 on the Aurora/Mantua border. Please wear mud proof footwear as the trails will be muddy on this 2-mile\, 2-hour walk.

SUMMARY:Woodcock Watch Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Just as dusk turns to night the male Woodcocks put on their “dancin’ shoes” to woo the females with impressive flight displays. The wet fields at the Novak sanctuary are ideal breeding grounds for these upland shore birds. They begin with a ground dance and then rocket up into the night sky to circle and fly for a few moments before twittering and zipping back to earth. If the hen is sufficiently impressed\, she will fly in to express her amazement. You will be amazed at the show these feather fluffs can put on! Meet at the Novak Sanctuary parking lot on the east side of Townline Rd. about a mile north of St. Rt. 82 on the Aurora/Mantua border. Please wear mud proof boots as the trails will be muddy on this 2-mile\, 2-hour walk.

SUMMARY:Winter Track Walk Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Winter Track Walk – Aurora Sanctuary \nLet’s see who else uses our trails when we are not there. A number of mammals and some birds leave distinctive tracks and “calling cards.” Sometimes there is a real-life story to tell from the imprints left in the snow. This is a 2 mile walk so dress for the weather with proper footwear. We will hope for a fresh light snowfall to show the details of the tracks registering in the snow. SUMMARY:Terminal Velocity Third Thursday Series (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Terminal Velocity: The Saga of the Falcons and the Tower  \nThe Peregrine Falcon is the fastest bird in the world\, capable of spectacular dives in pursuit of their prey\, reaching speeds of 200+ mph! They are a majestic\, awe-inspiring and cosmopolitan species that seems to epitomize evolutionary perfection. And yet by the late 1960s\, they had been extirpated from their range in most of the U.S. and the world. Then a critically endangered species restricted to the cliffs of distant wilderness areas and devastated by pesticides\, they have staged a remarkable recovery\, moving into the canyons of our cities! This illustrated program will explore the thousand-year-old relationship between Peregrines and people and chronicle their transformation from birds of wild places to urban dwellers. The program will focus on the story of the falcons that came to dwell at the Terminal Tower in downtown Cleveland. Presented by Harvey Webster. \nYou must register in advance for this meeting using this link: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwtce6qqTMtHdJ1oYHy_8T0bdqqEwDKplRv   \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

SUMMARY:Fringed Gentian Hike Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join us to see this exquisite native wildflower. These rare flowers are losing ground due to housing developments\, loss of wet soils\, excess mowing and the use of herbicides. Fringed Gentians are biennials which flower in the second year. The amazing and delicate blue blossoms are something to behold. In addition to the Fringed Gentian\, we also will see Closed or Bottle Gentian in bloom. Stop and absorb some of the last flowers to bloom for the season. Meet at the Brettschneider Park/Audubon Parking lot on the north side of Pioneer Trail a few hundred yards east of Page Road in Aurora.
