SUMMARY:Winter Solstice Hike Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Come and celebrate the closest Friday night to the Winter Solstice without interfering with Christmas Eve activities. These are among the longest nights of the year and we can enjoy the peace and quiet of the winter woods one night short of the full moon. Owls may call\, coyotes may howl\, beaver may announce us but these natural sounds are good for the soul. Meet at the parking lot about 1 mile north of State Route 82 on the east side of Townline Road on the Aurora/Mantua Border.

SUMMARY:Terminal Velocity Third Thursday Series (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Terminal Velocity: The Saga of the Falcons and the Tower  \nThe Peregrine Falcon is the fastest bird in the world\, capable of spectacular dives in pursuit of their prey\, reaching speeds of 200+ mph! They are a majestic\, awe-inspiring and cosmopolitan species that seems to epitomize evolutionary perfection. And yet by the late 1960s\, they had been extirpated from their range in most of the U.S. and the world. Then a critically endangered species restricted to the cliffs of distant wilderness areas and devastated by pesticides\, they have staged a remarkable recovery\, moving into the canyons of our cities! This illustrated program will explore the thousand-year-old relationship between Peregrines and people and chronicle their transformation from birds of wild places to urban dwellers. The program will focus on the story of the falcons that came to dwell at the Terminal Tower in downtown Cleveland. Presented by Harvey Webster. \nYou must register in advance for this meeting using this link: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwtce6qqTMtHdJ1oYHy_8T0bdqqEwDKplRv   \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

SUMMARY:Fringed Gentian Hike Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join us to see this exquisite native wildflower. These rare flowers are losing ground due to housing developments\, loss of wet soils\, excess mowing and the use of herbicides. Fringed Gentians are biennials which flower in the second year. The amazing and delicate blue blossoms are something to behold. In addition to the Fringed Gentian\, we also will see Closed or Bottle Gentian in bloom. Stop and absorb some of the last flowers to bloom for the season. SUMMARY:A Bird's Eye View via Zoom

SUMMARY:Climate Change with Terry Root via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Lake County Audubon Society is sponsoring a special Climate Change Event with the Council of Ohio Audubon Chapters.\n \nOur featured speaker\, Dr Terry Root\, will speak on the topic: Our Rapidly Changing Climate is  Changing … Well … Everything. \nThis online program is on Tuesday \, September 8th\, 8:00 pm. There is no charge\, but advance registration is required. \nClick here to register. \n\nCOAC is proud to present this extraordinary opportunity to hear a terrific speaker with outstanding credentials! Dr. Terry Root is Professor Emerita at Stanford and lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change 4th Assessment Report that in 2007 was co-awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with Vice President Al Gore. \nBack-to-back 100-year floods\, extended droughts\, and the polar vortex are all connected to the disruption of our climate due to greenhouse gas emissions. Since the late 1800s\, the average global temperature has increased about 1.8F (1C) and we are on track to surpass the Paris Agreement target of 2.7F (1.5C) by 2030. In response to this rapid warming\, much is changing on our planet\, including earlier spring warming so flowers are blooming and birds are breeding earlier. Species are moving to cooler areas on land and in the oceans. Unless we soon slow the rapid warming\, innumerable people will suffer due to heatwaves\, storm surges\, and spreading diseases. Additionally\, hundreds of thousands of species — including species we rely on — will face extinction. We must stop our fossil-fuel addiction to avoid such problems. \nThankfully\, there are many things that we can do\, collectively and individually\, to decrease the emissions of CO2.  We just need the will to do them. \n\nDr Terry L. Root is Professor Emerita at Stanford University. She was a lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change 4th Assessment Report that in 2007 was co-awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with Vice President Al Gore. Also\, she was a lead author for the 3rd Assessment Report (2001) and a Review Editor for the 5th Assessment Report (2014). In addition to other honors\, Root was awarded the Spirit of Defenders Award for Science by Defenders of Wildlife in 2010. She served on the National Audubon Board of Directors from 2010 to 2019\,and is on numerous science advisory boards. Root earned her undergraduate degree in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of New Mexico\, her master’s degree in Biology from the University of Colorado and her doctorate in Biology from Princeton University.  She was a professor at the University of Michigan for 14 years\, and then at Stanford University for 15 years.  She now resides in Sarasota\, FL. \nIf you are concerned about our planet – attend!

SUMMARY:Birders Workshop via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Birders Workshop – Review of 130 species likely to be seen in NE Ohio in mid-September \nWe are having a 1-hour  Zoom presentation August 27th @ 7:00pm showcasing 135 species of birds likely to be seen during Bird Quest (our annual 24-hour birding challenge on Sept. 11-12). One slide per specie showing photographs of male and female and a few comments about each regarding field marks and likely habitat where they may be found.  It will move along so we can stay within the 1-hour window.  It is meant to be a review for newer birders but everyone will enjoy ‘brushing up’ for fall migration.  A section on Confusing Fall Warblers is included.  Birds presented in taxonomic order\, like paging through a new field guide! \nThis FREE Birding Workshop is designed to help you refresh your skills or learn new ones! Includes birding tips and tricks and introduction to eBird. This year\, due to COVID-19\, our workshop will be conducted via ZOOM. Register HERE by August 26th.

SUMMARY:Warbler Warm-up Canceled
DESCRIPTION:This program has been canceled. \nSome of the prettiest birds on the planet are in NE Ohio from April through October. Most just pass through during May on their way north\, but some stay here to have their babies. Because we only see them for a short time every year we forget how to quickly identify them. This presentation uses actual photographs to help group birds by appearance AND preferred habitat. See all the warblers with eye rings on one slide. Learn about behaviors like tail wagging\, skulking on the ground and walking along branches to help narrow down choices. You will learn to appreciate trilling\, buzzy and high-pitched songs to narrow down birds you hear but can’’t see. We even send you home with a list of mnemonics like zay zay zay zoo zee (Black-throated Green Warbler). Approximately 1 – 1 ½ hours in length. \nMingo Lodge in Sand Run Metro Park\, 1501 Sand Run  Pkwy\, Akron\, OH. Akron Audubon Society
