SUMMARY:Next Silent Spring? Non ASGC
DESCRIPTION:ARE WE APPROACHING THE NEXT SILENT SPRING?\nRachel Carson raised the red flag years ago. Pesticides were not only killing insects\, but also disrupting the delicate balance of nature. Now history is repeating itself. \n\nTo commemorate Earth Day 2019\, the Northeast Ohio Sierra Club extends an invitation to attend the enlightening program\, “Next Silent Spring?” This free event will be held at the Cleveland Museum of Art Recital Hall on Sunday\, April 28\, from 2 – 4 PM. \nLaurel Hopwood\, Senior Advisor to Sierra Club’s Pollinator Protection Program\, will show the outstanding documentary “Nicotine Bees.” \nPollinator populations are declining. How does this affect our food supply? How does this affect our entire ecosystem?\nA panel of experts will discuss how everyone can help move things forward.\n* Dr. Mary Gardiner\, Associate Professor in the OSU Department of Entomology\, and her graduate students have been introducing pollinator pockets throughout vacant lots in Cleveland.\n* Tom Gibson\, principal of Green Paradigm Partners\, uses his soil building and community organizing skills to help revive neighborhoods.\n* Elle Adams\, founder of City Rising Farm\, helps people in underserved communities learn to grow fresh local food and create opportunities in their own neighborhoods.

SUMMARY:Tree Care & Repair Event
DESCRIPTION:Thousands of trees are planted each year but many are planted incorrectly\, too low and with mulch piled around the base. These practices cover the root flare of the tree – the area where the trunk meets the roots.  The root flare is critical for oxygen exchange and proper root growth.\nWhen it is covered up\, roots circle around the base restricting the tree’s ability to transport water. The bark begins to rot.  The tree can suffocate and die. We want the trees planted to be successful and live long\, happy lives. Join us to learn how to properly plant and take care of a tree. \nWe’ll analyze the trees at Mitchell’s to see if they need some help and if so\, we will fix them. \nPresenter: Colby Sattler\, ISA Certified Arborist\, Forest City Ecological Services \nFREE TREE SEEDLINGS (while supplies last) \nWorkshop is free but registration is required.\nContact Amy Roskilly at aroskilly@cuyahogaswcd.org – 216/524-6580\, x1005\nonline –  https://www.cuyahogaswcd.org/events/2019/10/19/tree-care-and-root-flare-repair

SUMMARY:Urban Birding Event
DESCRIPTION:Western Cuyahoga Audubon is having a VERY special event in early November. Urban Birder\, author and naturalist\, David Lindo\, will be in Cleveland November 2 through 9th. That week a whole bunch of birding and other activities will be taking place in and around Cleveland. Here is a link to the site.  https://www.wcaudubon.org/urban-birding-with-david-lindo-2019.html \nI highly encourage you to spread the word among birders\, naturalists\, educators\, those working with youth and/or underserved communities\, and others.  This will be a terrific way to meet a dynamic presenter who’ll encourage birding\, and just naturalizing (?) in general\, in an urban setting AND how much of an impact getting outdoors can be for young people. \nPlan to attend some of the programming listed\, for some there is a minimal cost\, for others registering on the WCAS website is encouraged. David’s book will be for sale at many of the events.  A quick shout-out to the Conservation Lab group that has been and is the driving force to bring David to Cleveland.  Thank you everyone\, I hope to see many of you at some of the events. \nNancy J. SUMMARY:Climate Change with Terry Root via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Lake County Audubon Society is sponsoring a special Climate Change Event with the Council of Ohio Audubon Chapters.\n \nOur featured speaker\, Dr Terry Root\, will speak on the topic: Our Rapidly Changing Climate is  Changing … Well … Everything. \nThis online program is on Tuesday \, September 8th\, 8:00 pm. There is no charge\, but advance registration is required. \nClick here to register. \n\nCOAC is proud to present this extraordinary opportunity to hear a terrific speaker with outstanding credentials! Dr. Terry Root is Professor Emerita at Stanford and lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change 4th Assessment Report that in 2007 was co-awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with Vice President Al Gore. \nBack-to-back 100-year floods\, extended droughts\, and the polar vortex are all connected to the disruption of our climate due to greenhouse gas emissions. Since the late 1800s\, the average global temperature has increased about 1.8F (1C) and we are on track to surpass the Paris Agreement target of 2.7F (1.5C) by 2030. In response to this rapid warming\, much is changing on our planet\, including earlier spring warming so flowers are blooming and birds are breeding earlier. Species are moving to cooler areas on land and in the oceans. Unless we soon slow the rapid warming\, innumerable people will suffer due to heatwaves\, storm surges\, and spreading diseases. Additionally\, hundreds of thousands of species — including species we rely on — will face extinction. We must stop our fossil-fuel addiction to avoid such problems. \nThankfully\, there are many things that we can do\, collectively and individually\, to decrease the emissions of CO2.  We just need the will to do them. \n\nDr Terry L. Root is Professor Emerita at Stanford University. She was a lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change 4th Assessment Report that in 2007 was co-awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with Vice President Al Gore. Also\, she was a lead author for the 3rd Assessment Report (2001) and a Review Editor for the 5th Assessment Report (2014). In addition to other honors\, Root was awarded the Spirit of Defenders Award for Science by Defenders of Wildlife in 2010. She served on the National Audubon Board of Directors from 2010 to 2019\,and is on numerous science advisory boards. Root earned her undergraduate degree in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of New Mexico\, her master’s degree in Biology from the University of Colorado and her doctorate in Biology from Princeton University.  She was a professor at the University of Michigan for 14 years\, and then at Stanford University for 15 years.  She now resides in Sarasota\, FL. \nIf you are concerned about our planet – attend!

SUMMARY:Every Yard Counts via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Despite global conservation efforts and successes\, many bird species have continued to decline over the past century. These declines received significant attention recently with the published paper in Science\, detailing the loss of 3 billion birds in North America\, as well as Audubon’s report on the impacts from climate change. Many of the species detailed in these reports are Neotropical migrants and cover vast amounts of land annually. Join us to learn about how you can make your yards and homes bird-friendly and support populations of migratory birds. \nMatthew Shumar is based in the School of Environment and Natural Resources at The Ohio State University where he is Program Coordinator of the Ohio Bird Conservation Initiative. He was the Project Coordinator and co-editor for The Second Atlas of Breeding Birds in Ohio and is Co-Director for the upcoming Ohio Bird Atlas 3. Matthew also runs a private research station with a year-round bird banding program in southeastern Ohio with his wife\, Molly\, and is currently serving as President of the Association of Field Ornithologists. \nVisit https://natureinmybackyard.ohionativeplants.org/programs/ to register for this program.

SUMMARY:Lighting Up the Night via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Lighting Up the Night: Gardening for Fireflies \nElijah Crabtree will begin with an introduction on the fascinating natural history of fireflies across the globe\, and here at home — where our eastern temperate forests host high levels of firefly biodiversity. Following this discussion on the fascinating nature of our flashy summer companions\, Elijah will explain the current threats facing Ohio’s fireflies and how each of us can take action in our own backyard to not only protect them but even bring them back!\nElijah is an Education Specialist and Naturalist for the Arc of Appalachia. He was born and raised in Chillicothe\, Ohio\, where he acquired a passion and insatiable interest for the natural and cultural history of Appalachia and the Western Allegheny Plateau. This led him to his former on-site residency at the Tremper Mound – a newly-protected\, major Hopewell Earthwork – overseeing its development as a protected cultural and natural preserve\, and as a management and educational hub for the region. In 2025\, he joined the administrative team as an Education Specialist to organize\, coordinate and lead many of the Arc’s Naturalist Programs. Elijah is an avid student of natural sciences and particularly loves spending his time studying Ohio’s geology and botany. \nTo register for the Zoom presentation please visit\nwww.natureinmybackyard.ohionativeplants.org/programs \nNature in My Backyard is a program administered by Ohio Native Plants with support from\nthe Audubon Society of Greater Cleveland\, Shaker Lakes Garden Club\,\nand Master Gardener Volunteers of Cuyahoga County.
