DESCRIPTION:Western Cuyahoga Audubon is having a VERY special event in early November. Urban Birder\, author and naturalist\, David Lindo\, will be in Cleveland November 2 through 9th. That week a whole bunch of birding and other activities will be taking place in and around Cleveland. Here is a link to the site.  https://www.wcaudubon.org/urban-birding-with-david-lindo-2019.html \nI highly encourage you to spread the word among birders\, naturalists\, educators\, those working with youth and/or underserved communities\, and others.  This will be a terrific way to meet a dynamic presenter who’ll encourage birding\, and just naturalizing (?) in general\, in an urban setting AND how much of an impact getting outdoors can be for young people. \nPlan to attend some of the programming listed\, for some there is a minimal cost\, for others registering on the WCAS website is encouraged. SUMMARY:Tree Care & Repair  Event
DESCRIPTION:Thousands of trees are planted each year but many are planted incorrectly\, too low and with mulch piled around the base. These practices cover the root flare of the tree – the area where the trunk meets the roots.  The root flare is critical for oxygen exchange and proper root growth.\nWhen it is covered up\, roots circle around the base restricting the tree’s ability to transport water. The bark begins to rot.  The tree can suffocate and die. We want the trees planted to be successful and live long\, happy lives. DESCRIPTION:Join ODNR Division of Parks & Watercraft and the Division of Wildlife at the Shenango Wildlife Area\, one of Audubon’s Important Bird Areas in Ohio. \nVisitors will have a chance to observe and photograph the variety of migratory birds found at this unique wildlife area. This FREE birding event is open to the public. Please dress appropriately for various weather conditions. The event will be held rain or shine. Remember to wear appropriate foot attire for hiking on trails\, wet areas and light brush. Participants are welcome to bring spotting scopes\, binoculars and cameras. Join Cleveland Museum of Natural History staff on a tropical trip down to southern Florida for a week of birding and more! Pack your suitcase and bring your binoculars as we search for Florida’s most charismatic and enigmatic birds and other wildlife in a variety of habitats. South Florida teems with diversity\, all set against a backdrop of beautiful habitats as well as a complex history of invasive species and habitat loss. We will explore some of the best-preserved and managed sites\, from Everglades National Park down to the Florida Keys. Along the way\, we will see a diverse set of birds\, including species unique to the southeastern United States as well as wintering populations of warblers we only see during migration in Ohio. DESCRIPTION:Ursuline College is screening the award-winning documentary “Plastic Paradise: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch\,” followed by a panel discussion about the threat of plastic pollution to the Great Lakes on Friday\, March 23\, 6-8:30pm. “Plastic Paradise: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch” is an independent documentary film in which journalist/filmmaker Angela Sun travels to Midway Atoll\, one of the most remote places on earth\, to see the plastics washed there from three distant continents. Along the way\, she meets scientists\, researchers\, influencers\, and volunteers who shed light on the effects of plastic consumption and learns the problem is more insidious than we could have ever imagined. \nPanelists represents several fields \nDiscussing the film and its implications for Great Lakes health will be the following panelists: Sherri Mason\, Ph.D.\, chair of geology and environmental sciences\, professor of chemistry\, State University of New York\, Fredonia; Crystal M.C. Meals and camping are available Friday night- Sunday at United Plant Savers\, which has a diverse ecosystem.\nBirds in the Hills Festival will feature field trips to Lake Hope State Park\, Lake Snowden\, and bird walks through United Plant Savers’ black willow grove\, riparian fields\, and deep forests. Participants can expect to see and hear up to 20 species of warblers\, including the cerulean warbler\, as well as scarlet tanagers\, yellow-billed cuckoos\, and a plethora of other migratory songbirds. Festival attendees will also have the opportunity to build bird feeders\, bird houses\, and meet other nature enthusiasts. SUMMARY:Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:It is Christmas Bird Count season. This is one of the longest citizen science projects in existence. 117 years ago ornithologist Frank Chapman converted folks from a horrendous tradition of the “Side Hunt” (where teams would shoot and collect as many bird and mammal carcasses as they could) to now counting and not disturbing the birds. An interesting history of this census can be found here. This is a National Audubon sanctioned event occurring from December 14 th through Jan 5 th. A group of at least 10 volunteers count all the birds seen or heard in a 15 mile diameter circle by going out in teams on specified routes and at the end of the 24-hour period tally and compile the data which is sent to National Audubon. It is great fun and you can participate as much or as little as you like. Look for one near you or go to the National Audubon website to find one.
