SUMMARY:Woodcock Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:The male woodcocks will be doing their courtship dance and flight display attempting to convince the females to choose them as a mate. If you have not witnessed this twilight ritual then here is your chance! As darkness falls we will hear the male begin his calling and then suddenly he will rocket upward in his flight display over the field. He will return to earth landing on his own little patch of dancing ground resuming his singing and dancing. The fields are wet this time of year so be prepared footwear wise! Meet at the Novak Sanctuary Parking lot on the east side of Townline Rd. a little less than a mile north of State Route 82 on the Mantua/Aurora line. \nWoodcock photo by Matt Valencic.

SUMMARY:Winter Tracks Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:So often we hike the woods and don’t realize what other creatures share it with us due to their secretive\, nocturnal habits. Once extirpated from Ohio they are now found in every county in the state. It is hard to believe that these 16 pound\, 46 inch long creatures with a 64 inch wingspan can blend in so well that we rarely see them. SUMMARY:Prairie Hike Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Laura Gooch. \nJoin us to see how prescribed burns can help to maintain a prairie. Frohring Meadow has a 100 acre tall grass prairie and wet sedge meadow habitat where grassland birds and migrating shorebirds can be found. Grassland habitat is unusual in our region\, therefore\, it attracts species not normally encountered. In early spring part of this prairie was burned to naturally maintain this herbaceous acreage. Over 40 species of prairie plants are encouraged and there is a demonstration garden plot showing examples of each one. SUMMARY:Twilight Hike Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Twilight is a special time for wildlife when roosting activity is occurring for the diurnal (day-time) creatures and wakening activity is occurring for the nocturnal creatures. Of course the crepuscular (twilight) creatures are at their ideal time of day. It is a cooler time of day and the fading light and lengthening shadows allow more concealment so that animals move about more freely. Often we hear owls\, coyote\, fox\, raccoon\, and deer. Many birds will be singing their call to roost song. Let’s see what we can turn up! SUMMARY:Breeding Bird Survey Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Help us count every bird we see and hear on this early morning survey. This event has been organized and compiled by trustee Mary Salomon for over 10 years. She has shown us trends in the number and kinds of species using our sanctuaries. The data has been added and will continue to advance our study of the Chagrin River Corridor Important Bird Area (I.B.A.). SUMMARY:Frog Slog Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:The concert will be in full swing as the early season singers will be trying to outdo their neighbor’s voice. Bullfrogs\, Green Frogs and Gray Tree Frogs will be mostly silent waiting for warmer waters and the Wood Frogs are likely done but Spring Peepers\, Western Chorus Frogs\, Leopard Frogs\, Pickerel Frogs\, and American Toads will be in their element with furious competition to attract a mate. Join us for a night walk on a possibly muddy trail where you will be glad you wore rubber boots and brought along a flashlight. Meet at the Bretschnieder/Audubon Sanctuary parking lot on the north side of Pioneer Trail just a few hundred yards east of Page Rd. in Aurora. (Photo of bullfrog by Matt Valencic.)

SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Help us contribute data to the Great Backyard Bird Count by participating in our annual winter bird survey. We will be recording every bird we see or hear along the trail in the beautiful Aurora Sanctuary. This is a great time for beginning birders as it is easy locate our quarry with no leaves to obscure and frustrate observation. Most winter birds in our area are easy to identify and there is a lower number of species so as not to overwhelm the new birder. Often an unusual species makes and appearance to add to the excitement. Meet at the Bretschneider parking lot on the north side of Pioneer Trail a few hundred yards east of Page Road in Aurora.

SUMMARY:Winter Track Walk Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:An inch of fresh snow will hold the impressions of footprints giving us the clues as to whom or what has walked the trail before us. There are numerous possibilities from coyotes to Wild Turkeys. Many resident wildlife are so shy and retiring that we don’t even know what species share the woods with us. Dramatic predator/prey-life and death stories can be read by looking at the signs in the snow along the trail. Please join us at the Novak Sanctuary parking lot on the east side of Townline Road a little more than a half mile north of State Route 82 on the Aurora/Mantua border.

SUMMARY:The Leaves Are Down (but our spirits are up!) (Field Trip)
DESCRIPTION:Without the leaf foliage our views will not be impaired and we will easily see the terrain and other topographical features of the landscape. Join us for a walk to see the changes that have occurred 1 year after clearing the southern fields at the Molnar Sanctuary. Last autumn Kenny Kresina spent many hours turning European Buckthorn that was too robust for our brush-hog into mulch. He used a specialized machine to cut and grind it. He has done some plantings since then and of course the Buckthorn is trying to rally a comeback but the battle has just begun. Meet at the Molnar Sanctuary parking lot on the west side of Page Road a few hundred yards north of Mennonite Road in Aurora.
